What is Backlink Value?
This estimates what a single backlink is roughly worth by combining the linking domain's authority score with its traffic — the two signals most commonly used as proxies for link value. It is explicitly a heuristic, not a valuation: no public formula prices a link, the weightings here are chosen to be reasonable rather than derived, and the two largest real factors, topical relevance and editorial context, are not inputs at all. Use it to rank a list of outreach targets against each other, or to sanity-check a price someone is asking. Do not use it as evidence of anything.
Why it matters
- It helps prioritize link-building or guest-post opportunities by relative value instead of gut feel.
- It gives you a comparable number when negotiating paid placements or partnerships.
- It reframes backlinks from a vague 'good for SEO' idea into something with a rough price tag.
The formula
Estimated Value = (Domain Rating × $8) + (Referring Traffic ÷ 1,000 × $2)
- Domain Rating
- — the linking site's authority score, 0–100
- Referring Traffic
- — the linking site's estimated monthly organic traffic
How to use this calculator
- 01Look up the linking domain's authority score in Ahrefs, Moz, or a similar tool.
- 02Look up its estimated monthly traffic.
- 03Enter both above to get an estimated dollar value.
- 04Use this to prioritize outreach targets or evaluate a paid placement offer.
Worked example
A potential guest post site has a Domain Rating of 50 and roughly 20,000 monthly organic visits.
- Authority component = 50 DR × $8 = $400
- Traffic component = (20,000 ÷ 1,000) × $2 = $40
- Estimated value = $400 + $40 = $440
- Note how heavily authority dominates — traffic barely moves the figure at this scale
This link is estimated at roughly $440 — useful context if the site is asking for a paid placement fee.
Industry benchmarks
Compiled August 2026
DR 20–30, low traffic
$100 – $250
Entry-level guest post or directory-style link.
DR 40–60, moderate traffic
$300 – $700
Solid mid-tier placement.
DR 70+, high traffic
$1,000+
Major publication or high-authority industry site.
Any DR, no topical relevance
Discount heavily
An unrelated link is worth a fraction of what this formula returns.
Common mistakes
- Treating this as a precise valuation rather than a directional estimate.
- Ignoring relevance — a high-authority but topically irrelevant link is worth less than this formula suggests.
- Paying for links based purely on this number without checking the site's actual traffic quality or spam signals.
- Ignoring that buying links violates Google's spam policies — this estimate values a link, it does not endorse purchasing one, and paid link networks carry real penalty risk.
How to improve your backlink value
Weight relevance alongside this estimate
A topically relevant DR-40 site is often more valuable than an unrelated DR-60 site, even though this formula doesn't capture that.
Track link value against content ROI
If link building supports specific content, check whether that content's ROI improved after the link was acquired.
Check content ROI →Value the referral traffic on its own terms
A link from a relevant site with an engaged audience sends real visitors, and that traffic can be valued directly rather than guessed at. It is the one part of a link's worth you can actually measure.
Value the traffic it sends →Frequently asked questions
Is this a real market valuation?+
No — it's a directional heuristic combining two commonly cited value signals. Real link marketplaces price links using additional factors this doesn't capture.
Does link relevance matter?+
Significantly — this formula doesn't account for topical relevance, which meaningfully affects real SEO value.
Should I be buying links at all?+
Paid links that pass ranking signals breach Google's spam policies, and the risk sits with the site receiving them. Most durable link building is earned — original research, tools, or genuinely useful content. This calculator is most defensible as a way to prioritise outreach effort rather than to price a purchase.
Why does authority dominate the estimate so much?+
Because the weighting here assumes authority is the stronger signal, which is a modelling choice rather than a measured fact. If you believe referral traffic matters more for your situation, the ranking this produces will be wrong for you — which is a fair reason to treat it as one input among several.
