What is Influencer Cost Per Engagement?
Cost Per Engagement divides the fee paid by the interactions a sponsored post actually produced. Its purpose is comparison: influencer rate cards are priced on follower count, which correlates only loosely with how many people respond, so two creators charging the same fee can differ several times over on this measure. It is an efficiency metric rather than an outcome one — it says how cheaply you bought attention, not whether that attention was from anyone likely to buy. Pair it with tracked revenue before drawing conclusions.
Why it matters
- It's the fastest apples-to-apples comparison across influencers of very different follower sizes and fee structures.
- It can reveal that a smaller, cheaper influencer is actually more cost-efficient than a bigger, pricier one.
- It's a useful secondary metric alongside ROI, especially for awareness-focused partnerships without direct tracking.
The formula
Cost per Engagement = Total Fee Paid ÷ Total Engagements
- Total Fee Paid
- — influencer fee for the partnership, excluding product cost
- Total Engagements
- — likes, comments, and shares combined from the post
How to use this calculator
- 01Get total fee paid to the influencer, separate from product cost.
- 02Pull total engagements (likes + comments + shares) from the post's insights.
- 03Enter both to see cost per engagement.
- 04Compare across influencers to identify the most cost-efficient partners.
Worked example
An influencer was paid $1,500 for a post that generated 8,000 combined engagements.
- Fee paid = $1,500
- Total engagements = 8,000 (likes, comments and shares)
- Cost per engagement = $1,500 ÷ 8,000 = $0.19
- A creator charging half as much for 2,000 engagements would be $0.38 — twice the price per interaction
At $0.19 per engagement, this falls in the moderate range — useful as a benchmark against other influencers considered for future partnerships.
Industry benchmarks
Compiled August 2026
Micro-influencers
$0.02 – $0.15
Typically the most cost-efficient tier.
Mid-tier influencers
$0.15 – $0.50
Higher reach, moderate efficiency.
Macro/celebrity influencers
$0.50+
Reach and brand halo often justify the premium for awareness goals.
TikTok versus Instagram
Usually far lower on TikTok
Engagement rates run higher there, so the same fee buys more interactions.
Common mistakes
- Comparing cost-per-engagement across very different platforms, where typical engagement rates differ significantly.
- Treating engagement volume as equally valuable regardless of quality — a comment is often more valuable than a like.
- Ignoring follower count entirely, since even efficient cost-per-engagement means little if reach is negligible.
- Failing to check whether the engagement is genuine — engagement pods and purchased interaction produce an excellent cost per engagement and no customers whatsoever.
How to improve your cost per engagement
Weight this against actual ROI, not just efficiency
A low cost-per-engagement influencer with no revenue impact isn't necessarily the better choice.

Having a clear cost-per-engagement figure gives leverage in fee negotiations with prospective partners.
Estimate the figure before you commit the fee
Applying a creator's historical engagement rate to their follower count predicts this number in advance, which turns it from a post-mortem into a screening test.

Should saves and video views count as engagements?+
You can include them if the platform reports them consistently — just be consistent across the influencers you're comparing.
Is a lower cost-per-engagement always better?+
Generally yes for efficiency, but check it alongside audience relevance and actual conversion — cheap engagement from the wrong audience isn't valuable.
Are all engagement types worth the same?+
Clearly not. A comment or a save signals far more intent than a like, and shares put the content in front of a new audience entirely. If a creator's engagement is almost all likes, the headline figure flatters them relative to one whose audience writes comments.
How do I spot inflated engagement?+
Look at the ratio of comments to likes and read the comments themselves. Generic single-word replies arriving in a burst shortly after posting is the usual signature of a pod, and it produces exactly the cheap engagement this metric rewards.
