What is Social Ad Combined Reach?
This estimates genuine combined unique reach across two platforms by subtracting the audience they share. Adding two platforms' reach figures together counts everyone present on both twice, which is how media plans routinely claim to have reached more people than exist in the target market. The correction is simple inclusion-exclusion arithmetic; the difficulty is the overlap percentage itself, which almost nobody measures and most people guess. A conservative guess still produces a far better answer than no adjustment at all.
Why it matters
- Media plans that just add platform reach numbers together systematically overstate total audience reached.
- It gives a more honest total reach figure for reporting to stakeholders.
- It highlights how much incremental reach a second platform is really adding, once overlap is accounted for.
The formula
Combined Reach = Reach A + Reach B − (Overlap % × Smaller of Reach A or B)
- Reach A, Reach B
- — estimated unique reach on each platform
- Overlap %
- — estimated share of the smaller audience also reached on the other platform
How to use this calculator
- 01Pull estimated unique reach for each platform from their respective ad managers.
- 02Estimate audience overlap — platform demographic data or past campaign data can help ground this.
- 03Enter all three to see a corrected combined reach figure.
- 04Use this instead of simply adding both platforms' reach numbers together.
Worked example
A campaign reaches 150,000 people on Platform A and 120,000 on Platform B, with an estimated 25% audience overlap.
- Platform A reach = 150,000; Platform B reach = 120,000
- Overlap = 25% × 120,000 (the smaller audience) = 30,000 people on both
- Combined reach = 150,000 + 120,000 − 30,000 = 240,000
- Simply adding the two would have claimed 270,000 — an audience 30,000 larger than exists
The true combined reach is about 240,000 — noticeably less than the 270,000 you'd get by simply adding both platforms together.
Industry benchmarks
Compiled August 2026
Very different platforms (e.g. LinkedIn + TikTok)
10% – 20% overlap
Lower overlap due to different user bases.
Similar platforms (e.g. Meta + Instagram)
40%+ overlap
Often significant shared audience, especially same-company platforms.
Same audience, different formats
50%+ overlap
Retargeting campaigns on multiple platforms to the same list.
Overlap ceiling
Cannot exceed the smaller audience
If overlap were 100%, the second platform would add no reach at all.
Common mistakes
- Simply adding reach numbers from two platforms together without adjusting for overlap.
- Using a guessed overlap percentage with no grounding in actual audience data.
- Not revisiting this estimate as targeting or platform mix changes between campaigns.
- Reporting the corrected figure as though it were measured — it rests on an estimated overlap, so present it as a planning range rather than a verified audience count.
How to improve your combined reach
Use platform-provided overlap data when available
Some ad platforms offer audience overlap estimation tools directly — use real data over a guess when possible.
Feed this into your reach-based budget planning
Combine with the CPM to Reach calculator when planning cross-platform spend.
Estimate reach from budget →Ask whether the second platform earns its place
If overlap is high, the extra platform is mostly buying additional frequency against people you already reach. That can be the right call — but it should be a decision, not an accident.
Check your frequency →Frequently asked questions
How do I estimate overlap without exact data?+
Start with a conservative estimate based on how similar the platforms' user bases are, and refine it using post-campaign survey or pixel data if available.
Does this work for more than two platforms?+
This calculator handles two at a time — for three or more, the overlap math becomes considerably more complex and usually needs dedicated media-planning software.
Is high overlap actually a problem?+
Not necessarily. Reaching the same person on two platforms builds frequency, which awareness campaigns need. It only becomes a problem when you report that duplicated exposure as incremental reach, and plan the next campaign against a number that was never real.
Can I measure overlap rather than estimate it?+
Partially. Some ad platforms offer audience overlap tools for audiences you have uploaded, and a post-campaign survey asking where people saw the ad gives a rough read. Neither is exact, but both beat a number chosen because it sounded reasonable.
