What is Organic Traffic Value?
Organic Traffic Value estimates what your free search traffic would cost if you had to buy the same clicks as ads. It exists to solve a political problem more than an analytical one: SEO produces no invoice, so it has no line item to defend, while paid media reports a number every month. Converting visits into their paid-equivalent cost puts both channels in the same currency. Be clear about what the figure is, though — it is a replacement cost, not revenue. Nobody would actually buy every one of those clicks at that price, and the number says nothing about whether the traffic converts.
Why it matters
- It gives SEO a defensible budget case, expressed in the same currency as a paid media spend.
- It's a fast way to compare the payoff of SEO investment against running equivalent paid campaigns.
- Tracked monthly, it shows whether SEO is actually compounding in value or plateauing.
The formula
Organic Traffic Value = Monthly Organic Traffic × Equivalent CPC
- Monthly Organic Traffic
- — visits from organic search in a month
- Equivalent CPC
- — what you'd pay per click for similar traffic via ads
How to use this calculator
- 01Pull monthly organic traffic from Search Console or analytics.
- 02Estimate the CPC you'd pay for equivalent keywords in your ads account.
- 03Enter both above to see the monthly value.
- 04Track this monthly to see if SEO investment is compounding.
Worked example
A site gets 15,000 organic visits a month, and equivalent paid clicks would cost about $2.50 each.
- Monthly organic traffic = 15,000 visits
- Equivalent cost per click if bought as ads = $2.50
- Value = 15,000 × $2.50 = $37,500 per month
- Annualised, roughly $450,000 of traffic you are not paying a platform for
This traffic would cost $37,500/month to replicate via ads — a useful number for justifying continued SEO investment.
Industry benchmarks
Compiled August 2026
Small/local business site
$1,000 – $5,000/mo
Lower traffic volume, often lower CPC.
Mid-size content site
$10,000 – $50,000/mo
Higher traffic and often competitive CPCs.
Large publisher/ecommerce
$100,000+/mo
High volume across many keywords.
Branded queries
Usually excluded
You would rarely pay for traffic already searching your name.
Common mistakes
- Using a single flat CPC across all traffic when different pages target very different keyword values.
- Treating this number as actual revenue rather than an equivalent-cost estimate.
- Not recalculating as both traffic and market CPCs shift over time.
- Including branded search, which inflates the figure with traffic that would arrive with or without SEO work.
How to improve your organic traffic value
Segment value by page or topic cluster
High-intent pages are worth far more per visit than informational ones — a blended number hides this.
Pair this with actual conversion data
Combine with a landing page audit to see how much of this traffic value is actually being converted.
Check your conversion rate →Report the revenue figure next to this one
Replacement cost persuades finance; attributed revenue survives scrutiny. Presenting only the larger number invites someone to discover the difference on your behalf.

Is this the same as actual revenue from SEO?+
No — it's an equivalent-cost estimate, not attributed revenue. Use a conversion-based calculation for actual revenue impact.
Where do I find a realistic CPC?+
Your Google Ads account's keyword planner, filtered to keywords similar to your top organic queries.
Should branded search be included?+
Generally no. Traffic from people searching your company name would mostly arrive regardless of SEO investment, and its paid CPC is artificially cheap. Excluding it gives a smaller number that holds up far better under questioning.
Will finance accept this as a real number?+
As context, usually; as revenue, no — and you should not present it that way. It is an avoided-cost estimate, and the honest framing is 'replacing this traffic with ads would cost roughly this much', not 'SEO earned this much'.
