What is Google Ads Keyword Bid?
This calculates a maximum keyword bid from value-based bidding logic: what a click on this specific keyword is expected to be worth in revenue, divided by the return you require on it. It is the same reasoning Google's Target ROAS bidding applies, made explicit so you can check the machine's homework. The advantage over a single account-wide bid is that it prices each keyword on its own conversion rate and order value, which is exactly where the differences between keywords are largest and most consequential.
Why it matters
- It sets bids based on what a click is actually worth in revenue, not a guess or a competitor-driven number.
- It's directly usable as an input for manual CPC bidding or as a sanity check against Google's automated Target ROAS bidding.
- It naturally bids higher on keywords with better conversion rates or order values, which is exactly where higher bids are justified.
The formula
Max Bid = (Conversion Rate × Average Order Value) ÷ Target ROAS
- Conversion Rate
- — share of clicks on this keyword that convert to a sale
- Average Order Value
- — average revenue per converting customer
- Target ROAS
- — minimum return per dollar of ad spend you're aiming for
How to use this calculator
- 01Pull keyword-level conversion rate from Google Ads (Conversions ÷ Clicks for that keyword).
- 02Enter average order value for purchases from that keyword or product category.
- 03Set your target ROAS — use your break-even ROAS as the absolute floor, with some margin above it.
- 04The result is the maximum you should bid on that keyword to hit your target ROAS.
Worked example
A keyword converts at 4%, with an average order value of $90, and a target ROAS of 4x.
- Keyword conversion rate = 4%, average order value = $90
- Expected revenue per click = 4% × $90 = $3.60
- Max bid = $3.60 ÷ 4 target ROAS = $0.90
- Sense check: 100 clicks at $0.90 = $90 spend, producing 4 orders worth $360 — a 4x return
This keyword can support bids up to about $0.90 per click while still hitting a 4x ROAS target — useful as a manual bid ceiling or a check against automated bidding.
Industry benchmarks
Compiled August 2026
High-converting branded keywords
Highest justified bids
Best conversion rate usually lives here.
Generic category keywords
Moderate bids
Lower conversion rate than branded, still valuable.
Broad/awareness keywords
Lowest justified bids
Lower conversion rate limits what you can pay per click.
Competitor keywords
Justified bid often below market
Poor conversion rates rarely support the price the auction demands.
Common mistakes
- Using account-wide conversion rate instead of the specific keyword's actual rate, which can vary widely.
- Setting target ROAS below your actual break-even ROAS, which guarantees a loss even if the campaign 'performs'.
- Not revisiting this bid as conversion rate or average order value shifts seasonally.
- Bidding the exact calculated maximum with no buffer, leaving no room for normal performance variance.
How to improve your keyword bid
Confirm your target ROAS against break-even first
This calculator is only as good as the target ROAS you enter — check it isn't set below your actual break-even point.
Calculate your break-even ROAS →Recalculate by keyword, not account-wide
Running this per keyword or ad group, rather than once for the whole account, usually reveals meaningfully different bid ceilings worth setting individually.
Lift conversion rate to raise the ceiling
The bid ceiling moves in direct proportion to conversion rate. Doubling it doubles what you can afford to pay, which wins auctions no bid increase could justify on the old page.

How is this different from Target CPC?+
Target CPC works from an allowable cost per customer; this calculator works from expected revenue per click and a target ROAS — both are valid, but this one is closer to how Google's automated Target ROAS bidding actually works.
Can I use this instead of automated bidding?+
Yes, for manual CPC campaigns — for automated Target ROAS bidding, this calculator is more useful as a sanity check on the target you set.
What if I don't have keyword-level conversion data yet?+
Use account-level or ad-group-level conversion rate as a starting estimate until the keyword has enough volume for its own reliable data.
Should the target ROAS be revenue-based or profit-based?+
Enter a revenue-based target, since that is what ad platforms optimise against — but derive it from margin rather than picking a round number. A 4x target on a 25% margin business is exactly break-even, so the real target has to sit above it.
